A lack of electrolytes in aquarium freshwater may cause serious health problems for freshwater fish. API AQUARIUM SALT supplies electrolytes to improve fish respiration. Made from evaporated sea water and containing natural active ingredients such as a natural fish tonic, API AQUARIUM SALT promotes the overall health of your fish by improving their gill function and reducing stress in a freshwater aquarium. This all-natural salt provides the essential electrolytes fish need for the uptake of oxygen and release of carbon dioxide and ammonia through the gills. API AQUARIUM SALT should only be added to reduce stress during new freshwater aquarium setup and water changes or to promote disease recovery when solving specific fish health issues. Use API AQUARIUM SALT when setting up a new freshwater aquarium, when changing water or treating disease. Make sure to take extra care when using salt with live plants, as some plants may be sensitive. With API Aquarium products, it’s easy to keep a beautiful saltwater, freshwater or reef aquarium. Good value
Always meant to get some aquarium salt but never did, has a few issues in my tanks so decided to try rather than buy chemicals etc. Good amount for the money imo. No complaints here

Good quality
API products always seem to perform well, so with brand confidence, I bought this and wasn’t disappointedStraight forward salt, easy to use and apply. Has helped to keep my fish healthy amd now i use this as my go-to saltThe packaging is cardboard. Which is great as you can recycle it, but not very durable as you cannot reseal the packagingGreat brand, great product. Would recommend

Saved my fish
Heâs still alive thanks to this treatment. So I had 4 fish over 2 tanks that werenât quarantined. Both tanks were hit with white spot, I launched a full assault. Raised tempt to 30C on both tanks, used this salt and the API whitespot treatment. Iâll be honest out of 20 fish I lost 3, all being upside down catfish with no scales so I feel that couldâve been the issue, the choice to half treat the tanks was an option but so much whitespot I risked losing everything.I would 100% recommend this and recommend people keep it for just in case situations especially for the price

Good and bad
Bought to put trace minerals into water and fight any fungus. The dosage recommended is very small, and is enough to put some trace minerals into the water. To fight fungus, the concentration needs to be much much higher, which fish can only tolerate for short periods, so there’s probably not much benefit increasing the recommended dose much (up to double dose is OK, from my use of it). The reason why higher dose is not recommended, IMO, is because it’s not “meant” for freshwater fish like Bettas. Also, scaleless fish like Catfish react worse to it as it upsets their balance (I’ve noticed this recently in my Loaches). So a small amount, in accordance with recommended dose (or double at max) is fine. The problem here is the price and the marketing. This is just salt. It is probably sea salt, i.e. sodium chloride, as rock salt is more expensive. Rock salt is basically much purer sodium chloride (99% vs 85% in sea salt). So, you can just buy ordinary sea salt which must be additive-free. I’ve just bought a 1kg one on Amazon for £2.50 which should last me at least 1 year, if not several years. There is no such thing as “Aquarium Salt” – it’s like saying “Dinner Salt” or “Lunch Salt”. Just ensure it’s Sea Salt or Rock Salt and you’re fine. This is why I’ve given 3 stars. Because I’m tired of these Aquarium manufacturers ripping off people by taking advantage of people’s ignorance. Before I started doing all this research – and I’d love to not have any reason to research, but the price tags on aquarium products makes it necessary for me to do – I was ignorant, completely ignorant about fishkeeping, and I still am to a large degree. I can save you some money on this Salt issue, though, so hope it helps.

I’ve started using a little sea salt with cichlids. I knew they were tolerant to salt levels and was beneficial to them. In fact, with added salt, I was surprised to be greeted with three fry. I’m not saying the salt made them “randy” but I’ve had more fish in a larger tank and never had any breeding and their life expectancy seemed lower. Now, given that experience, I decided to add salt to my 500 gallon pond with Shubunkin and Fantail Goldfish. Fancy goldfish, less expensive and smaller than koi for my pond size. As you may know, these are hearty fish but not immune from common ailments. Fin rot being common for decorative fish. Since water changes and muck removal are more difficult for an in-ground pond set-up, I have increased to amount of filtration (using filter cleaning and pour-outs as my water changes), increased the substrate sand depth and started adding API pond salt to boost their natural defenses and curb the underlying causes.4 pounds is just under the recommended amount on the label and way over, by one cup, some others recommend from a web search. I stayed at the lowest recommendation because I use some extravagant marginal plants for Nitrate removal; with their impressive growths losing them would be just as costly as losing 12-to-16-inch adult fish. There are lots of options available from other manufacturers but API though I am wary of “amateur hobbyist” aquatic products, I’m equally warry of over-priced bulk volume venders with no proven record to substantiate their price against their product claims. Captive fish salt is fairly straight forward. So, in sum, I chose API for their price add volume needed against bulk item storage and other products unproven quality. Quality that can’t be measured by the number of units sold, 5-star ratings and written reviews from casual hobbyists and patio decorators. No offense. I have too much value invested if you include the lives I’ve chosen to care for; no matter the “value” you give a fish or a plant against a dog for example. My partner cries the same for the loss of a fish as the loss of a dog. Keep that in mind as you consider my review.
